News from Vanier - Week of May 17 - 21, 2021

5/17/2021

Dear Parents and Students,

Welcome to another busy week at Vanier.  May is flying by and everyone is working hard to finish assignments and make sure they are caught up and prepared for June exams.  As always, please reach out to teachers if you are feeling lost or behind.  The counsellors and learning assistance teachers are here to help you and there is always help in the senior and junior skills rooms.  This can be a time of stress and anxiety for some students, so please let us know if you need help.  Putting off assignments or not attending school may seem like a well needed break, but it usually results in being more stressed in the long run.  Be patient with yourself and each other, remain hopeful and know that there is a lot of help if you need it.

Prayer for the week:
Creator God, Life gets busy. Help me to make time for You. Help me to develop and follow through with a consistent practice that intentionally build relationship with You. Amen.

“Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.” Romans 12:12

Grad Auction: Thanks from the Class of 2021!
The recent online grad auction was a great success.  Over $2,300 was raised during that time.  Thank you to everyone who donated all the beautiful items for the auction, the students and teachers who reached out to the community and to our grad teacher advisors for setting it all up and running the auction.  A special shout out to Melissa Craig, our financial administrator at Vanier who helped set up the money transfers and who cheerfully takes in all the fundraising money for all groups at school and makes sure we all stay on budget.  It is often a thankless job, so next time you see Melissa - give her a nice shout out!

Victoria Day is Monday, May 24th.  But why do we celebrate it?
In case you didn't know...
The British queen was born on May 24, 1819. She was a reigning monarch (Queen) for 63 years, seven months and two days.
Victoria Day was declared a Canadian holiday by the government in 1845.
At that time, it was celebrated with picnics, parades, sporting tournaments, fireworks and cannon salutes.
When Queen Victoria died in 1901, Canada’s parliament officially named the holiday Victoria Day.
It was decided that the day would be celebrated on the second last Monday in May. In 2021, that's May 24th.
In 1952, the government made the decision to begin celebrating Victoria Day on a Monday. It would be observed on May 24th if that worked out. Otherwise, it would be held on the Monday right before it.
Today, Victoria Day is a holiday throughout most of Canada. The day is usually marked in most cities with parades, outdoor events and activities like camping and firework displays. Today, it might be marked in different ways that allow people to keep a safe distance. That could be virtually online, on television or as a family in the back yard.
