News from Vanier - Week of May 10 - 14, 2021

5/10/2021

Dear Parents and Students,

The school year is winding down, but we are still very busy at Vanier.  With the sun being out and the nice weather greeting us every day, we should all take advantage of the season.  Having some time to study can be a challenge when the sun is out, but this is the time to put in all your effort to finish your courses with success and confidence.  Please reach out for help if you are struggling-we have lots of resources available for you.

So we can say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper, so I will have no fear…” ~Hebrews 13:6
Dear Lord, I will not be anxious about my circumstances because I choose to put all my faith and trust in you. You will never let me down because you are always faithful. Amen.

Yearbook 2021 - order your copy today!
Sports! Special days! Portraits! The yearbook is truly the most valuable keepsake from this remarkable time. Yearbook 2021 will contain photos of students from all grades involved in a variety of school activities. The Yearbook2021 Class is working extremely hard to put together a book to remember one of the most unpredictable school years of all time. Order today so we can guarantee there are enough copies for everyone! The cost is $40.00. Use this link to make your order: http://jostensyearbooks.com/?REF=A01074103

Interim Reports
For students who are struggling in their courses, you should receive a report from your teachers indicating what your progress is and what you can do to improve your marks before exams.  This may be in the form of an email, phone call or letter in the mail.  If you are unsure, please contact the teacher.

Attendance
We often see attendance fall off in May when the weather gets warm.  This year more than ever before, students need to be in school as much as possible.  Please let us know if you child will not be there.

Summer School

We have been told there will be summer school running this year.  Typically students are able to complete math or English courses they have attempted throughout the year and earned at least a 40% mark in.  We do not know at this point exactly which courses will be offered or the format it will be offered in, but as we find out details, we will pass the information along to you.

First Nations Education Directorate Nutrition Programs Feast

A big thank you goes out to the First Nations Education Directorate for providing the entire school with a delicious feast last Friday.  The food was plentiful, healthful and expertly prepared.  Thanks to the organizers at FNED and to Ms. Wallace who made all the arrangements at the school.  Well done!

Have a good week,
Katrina Brogdon, Principal and Alethea Wallace, Vice-Principal

News from Vanier - Week of May 3 - 7, 2021

5/3/2021

Dear Parents and Students,

It looks like Spring is finally here!  More students are going outside on nice days which is great.  We should all be going outside during the day.   Please encourage your child to go outside at lunch.  We all need natural light and fresh air to be our best.  It really does make a difference.

We only have 6 weeks of school left (including this week!). There is a lot of support available for students to finish strong this year.  Please encourage them to contact the student support teachers, the Learning Assistance teachers and the counsellors if they feel they need extra help.

A reminder to parents:  Grade 8 and 9 students must be up to date with their assignments to have early dismissal on Wednesday.  They must check with all of their teachers before the early dismissal time.

Prayer for the week:
Dear Lord, Thank you for the gift of faith in you that you have blessed me with. I will continue to put all my trust in you.
And Jesus said to him, “Go, for your faith has healed you.” Instantly the man could see, and he followed Jesus down the road. ~Mark 10:52

News from Vanier - Week of April 19 - 23, 2021

4/20/2021

Dear Parents and Students,

After an unusually busy week last week, all the hard work has paid off.  We have all of our students at school for full days now.  There are still firm Covid prevention measures in place, but it is very nice to see all our senior students back in school.  The longer classes are giving teachers time to work with every student in class.  Teachers are able to check on progress and answer questions in person.  Grade 10-12 teachers are reporting that they are enjoying the double blocks every day to spend more time with their students.  This is a time to give a big thank you to all the teachers and educational assistants who worked tirelessly on Thursday and Friday to move furniture, set up classrooms, and prepare for the big changes. A special thanks also goes to our Office Administrator, Alex Sullivan.  Alex did all of the computer work to meld classes and get the attendance program ready for the full day program.  It was a big job!

This week includes Earth day so let’s reflect on our blessings, our clean air and water, and the beautiful environment that is our Yukon home.

The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.  Psalms 19:1

OurSchool- Survey
Over the next two weeks, we will be participating in the OurSchool survey. All schools in Yukon are administering this survey to measure student engagement, increase student involvement & sense of belonging at school.
About the OurSCHOOL Student Survey:
  • Allows students to share their feedback anonymously on their experiences at school, school environment, and school improvement programs.
  • Based on their feedback, students have the opportunity to be involved in action plans fostering increased student engagement
  • Participation in the survey is voluntary, however, all students are encouraged to participate.
  • The time required to complete the survey may vary, but it is designed to be completed in approximately 35-40 minutes.

Professional Development Day - Friday April 30th.
Please mark your calendars – this is a no students at school day for Vanier.

Report Cards And Student Led Conferences – Thank You!
Thank you to all the parents who were able to attend the Student Led Conferences last week.  For those of you who were not able to attend, your child’s report card was sent home in the mail.  If you would still like to meet with your child’s teachers, please contact them and arrange a time.

Warmer Weather Means Get Some Sunshine!
With our warmer days we really want our students to get some time outside, especially at lunch time.  A lot of grade 8 and 9 students are still spending most or all of their lunch break inside and on their phones.  Please encourage your child to get outside now that we have warm weather.  It is healthier and better for keeping alert and awake after lunch.

Tutoring
Because of the senior students going back to full time studies, any lunch time tutoring that was happening between a senior student and a junior student can no longer be accommodated. If the junior would still like to receive tutoring, they are encouraged to talk to Ms. Cann to make alternate arrangements to see what else can be made available.

Have a good week,
Katrina Brogdon, Principal and Alethea Wallace, Vice-Principal

News from Vanier - Week of April 12 - 16, 2021

4/12/2021

Dear Parents and Students,

Today is election day.  I would like to take a minute to say a prayer of thanks for living in such a peaceful and safe country where even our most heated political debates rarely end in violence or tragedy.  I am thankful for our democratic process and the trust that smooth transitions in leadership happen at all levels of government.

We have a very busy week.  Student led conferences, literacy and numeracy exams, and the work that must take place for the transition to full days for senior students are but a few things happening at Vanier this week.  I look forward to seeing you all at our Student Led Conferences on Wednesday and Thursday.

Prayer
Dear Lord, Thank you for the gifts of freedom, democracy and peace.  Help us to never take our privileges for granted and help us to be better members of our community.
He has told you what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?  Micah 6:8

Back to School Full Days for Grades 10-12 Starts Monday, April 19th
There is a bell schedule/timetable posted below for parents or students who missed it in last weeks email.  We have copies of this form for all grade 10-12 students if they wish to have one.  Since our bell schedule has not changed, students should be well acquainted with our schedule.

Senior School Bells
School starts at 8:45
Lunch is from 11:25-12:35
Afternoon class starts at 12:35.
We dismiss grades 10-12 at 3:15.

We made the decision at Vanier to keep our long lunch so that senior students will have time to meet with their teachers, meet with counsellors or learning assistance tutors or access resources in the learning commons.  Because we will have around 20 minutes of overlapping times for our junior and senior lunch, we will be asking grade 10-12 students to vacate the cafeteria by 12:00 so that tables can be cleaned and made ready for the grade 8-9 students.

School Name Change

We have only received a few suggestions for the school name change.  It’s not too late!

Welcome back to school!  Hopefully everyone had a restful spring break.  Time will fly by now- only 10 weeks of school left for the year.  Let’s make sure everyone makes good use of that time.
This is Holy Week- Christians observe this special time as the centre of their faith. We will have a Stations of the Cross Liturgy on Wednesday and Friday and next Monday are school holidays.

Important Reminders:

City Bus Passes
Many students are not picking up their bus passes from the office. We had almost 40 passes that were not picked up in February.  This is a big expense so if you no longer need a bus pass, please tell the office.  If you do not pick up your March bus pass before the end of the week, we will not be ordering you a bus pass for April.  Please let us know if there is a reason you cannot pick up your bus pass.

Masks
A few students are asking for masks from the office 3-4 times a week!  By now, everyone should have a supply of reusable masks.  They wash and dry very easily.  The disposable masks are not environmentally friendly, so please remember your reusable masks. Thanks to everyone who remembers and wears their masks every day.

Booster Card Money
We are waiting for a few students to bring in their booster card money.  Try to get this done before the end of this week.

White Hatter Program
This organization’s primary focus is on internet and digital safety for youth.  They are well resourced and researched, with many law enforcement agency partners.  They have given presentations for years to parents, youth and communities.  Please read the following information and mark your calendars for the free information sessions.

Whitehorse RCMP is proud to partner with The White Hatter to provide Yukon parents the opportunity to participate in two webinars. In recent years, the RCMP have seen a drastic increase in child pornography, extortion and child luring type offences. Whitehorse RCMP believes that it is beneficial to provide parents with extra information on how to keep children safe online. These webinars are free for participants and offered to all parents and caregivers, in the Yukon.

And finally…
We are in our last week before Spring Break.  Students will be pushing to get work finished so they can have a real “break” from school.  The week we return from Spring Break is a short one, and teachers are submitting their marks on April 1st for the mid-term report cards.  Please put in a big effort on to get your work completed and have a good mid-term report.  For grade 12 students, these mid-term marks can impact some post-secondary admissions, so ask for help if you need it!

Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.  Have a wonderful Spring Break!

News from Vanier - Week of March 1-5, 2021

3/1/2021

Dear Parents and Students

Happy March!  Spring is on its way and although the snow is lots of fun, maybe it could stop for a bit?
Congratulations to our Grad class of 2021 on their great show of spirit and skill during this weekend’s Rendezvous activities.  Though they didn’t come in 1st place, I think they had the best school spirit by far!

Thoughts of optimism-the days are getting lighter and hopefully moods are as well.  I hope students and parents can be optimistic and know that it is possible to be successful with the effort, support and positivity. Please ask for help if you need it.  We are here for you and want all students to have a successful semester.

And may the Lord our God show us his approval and make our efforts successful. Yes, make our efforts successful! ~Psalm 90:17
Dear Lord, Thank you for showing me the way. I can always count on you. I am believing in a victorious outcome. Amen

Reminder about the school name change- this was in last week’s email.  This is a very important area of growth that has lasting consequences for our school.  Please give your feedback.

A time for change

The school council knows that the name of our school is part of what drives the culture and ethos of our community.  As most of you know recent events involving one of the Vanier family members has led to a reflection on the current name of our school. Council would like to thank everyone for their input and advice on the where we should go with the name of our school.

Having listened to input from teachers, students, parish members and the diocese, council has determined that it is the right time for us to change the name to reflect more accurately the mission and values of our community.

Changing our school name

Who can propose a new name?

While we have sought and appreciate the input of the wider Catholic community into the decision to change the name, Council will only be inviting all current VCSS students, teachers and administration to submit a proposal for changing our school name.

Council will donate $200 to a charity of the choice of the person who nominates the chosen new school name.

How do I propose a new name?

You can download the School Name Proposal Package from the School Council portal on the VCSS website. Follow the instructions in that package and then email your proposal by March 31st 2021 to [email protected]
How will a new name get chosen?

Once all proposals have been submitted, council and a small support group will review and evaluate the proposals. Once a new name has been selected council will ask the Episcopal Corporation for a blessing on the new name and then work with the Department of Education to put forward that name to the Government of Yukon who will make the final decision.

Once the government has made its decision the name will be announced along with the name of the person who proposed it.

It is council’s hope that a new name can be selected and in place for the 2021/22 School calendar year.

And finally….
Vanier enjoyed a delicious Cabane à Sucre on Thursday! Merci to the French Department for organizing this very popular event! Yearbook 2021 staff were on hand taking photos. Yearbook orders will be taken in early April so stay tuned for details!

Have a great week!
