December Update - Vanier Name

We would like to sincerely thank everyone that took the time to complete the survey in October.  We received a total of 123 responses, which included parents, students, teachers, and local Roman Catholic community members.

After meeting to analyze and discuss the results, the Council believes that the majority of respondents would support a decision to change the school's name.  Many people expressed that in light of the seriousness of the allegations against Jean Vanier, and more importantly, the need to show support for all women that have experienced abuse outweighed any reasons to maintain the association with the Vanier name.

Concerning the things that should be considered in a new name, many respondents indicated naming a school after an individual was problematic and should be avoided.  There was also a strong belief that the word 'catholic' or a reference to the Christian faith should also be included.  And finally, respondents believed that whatever decision or name was chosen – it must reflect the school community's values and principles.

We have had discussions with the bishop, who has also indicated his support in taking the next steps toward a renaming process for our school.  This decision would also be in line with many other schools across Canada.

What is the next step?

At our next council meeting on December 15, 2020, we will present the survey results to those interested.  From there, we intend to put forth a motion to approve moving forward with a school renaming process. (Click Here for Zoom Meeting Information)

We realize that this decision will result in mixed emotions.  Before voting on this motion, the Council is inviting parents, students and staff that may wish to speak to join the meeting if they are able.

If you have any questions or concerns or cannot attend, please do not hesitate to contact me or any council member, and we would be happy to chat.

Thank you again to all those that provided their input to date.
